Practical Guide for Candidates in Parliamentary Elections

What have candidates for parliamentary elections to look out for? Our practical guide explains the fundamentals.

Standing for parliamentary elections in Cameroon is often a major challenge for some candidates. Many young men and women enter politics without always being aware of the realities of electoral competition, let alone the responsibilities associated with the elected office for which they wish to stand. Faced with the realities on the ground, they often end up giving up on their dream before even entering the race, content to play supporting roles during these elections.

Our practical guide for candidates in local and parliamentary elections fills this gap by providing potential candidates with a tool that enables them to understand the requirements for standing as a candidate, the composition and functioning of the institution in which they wish to serve as an elected representative in the National Assembly, the responsibilities associated with the position to be filled, as well as the method of allocating seats within these various institutions, not to mention post-election disputes in the event of a challenge to the election results.

This guide has been developed by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung with finances from the European Union and is for all interested candidates regardless of their political affiliation.
