Contrary to all expectations, the political liberalisation that began in the early 1990s did not lead to a genuine opening up of the socio-political arena and hence to a more inclusive participation of the various social classes in the sub-region.
The top-down approach to governance pursued by the political elite, both in the conception of public policies and in their implementation, relegates citizens to a passive position. Consequently, this explains the withdrawal of citizens from political participation and public debate.
With this in mind, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is committed to support the integration of all social groups, in particular young people, women and other marginalised people, into decision-making processes. The Foundation is further dedicated to bring the concerns of citizens to the attention of political institutions by facilitating spaces for discussion and advocacy on issues of public interest. This is achieved through leadership training, public debates, capacity-building workshops and many other activities.
