Congo Basin: Traditional authorities from Cameroon and Congo want to join forces

The tradition keepers of the two countries, both members of the Commission des Forêts d'Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC), agreed on 19th of August 2023, at the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, to join their efforts to raise their voices in favour of the preservation of the ecosystems of the Congo Basin.

The agreement was formalized by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Consultative Council of Elders and Traditional Leaders of the Republic of Congo and the National Council of Traditional Leaders of Cameroon.

This important meeting comes just a few weeks after the Advocacy of Traditional Authorities for the Conservation of Ecosystems organised by RecTrad (a network of traditional authorities in Cameroon).  As a prelude to the Summit of the planet's three basins, scheduled for October 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the traditional authorities agreed on key points upon which they can mobilise to better defend ecosystems and the rights of the people who live within them.

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is delighted to be a partner in this initiative, which is so important in the search for solutions to the climate challenges confronting the Congo Basin.
